Yellow Poplar (Liriodendron tulipifera) is also called tuliptree, tulip-poplar, white-poplar and whitewood.Considered one of the most attractive and tallest of eastern hardwoods; it is a fast growing shade tree with bright green leaves resembling tulip flowers, turning golden yellow in fall.Yellow poplar grows 70’ to 90’ in height with a mature spread of about 40’.
Habitat:
Is shade intolerant and does best in full sun.Grows in acidic, loamy, sandy, well drained clay soils.
Uses:
Used in furniture and framing construction and is also valued as a honey tree, a source of wildlife food and a shade tree for large areas.
Botantical Name:
Liriodendron means “lilly tree”, tulipifera means “tuliplike,” referring to the flowers.
