Native Pecan(Carya illinoensis) can reach up to 130 feet in height but usually grows 70 to 100 feet tall with a 40 to 75 foot spread. Native pecan is a deciduous American native tree and the largest of the hickories. The tree has a uniform, symmetrical, broadly oval crown with massive branches. Fruits ripen in September and October. Pecan trees makes a good shade for a home setting and are well-suited to large landscapes. Wildlife, such as birds, fox and gray squirrels, raccoons and deer are attacted to the fruit.
Habitat:
Full sun or part shade location; grows best on fertile, well-drained soil or alkaline moist soil. Will grow on droughty sandy soils, however more slowly.
Fruit:
Hard brown shell oval to round - 1 to 3 inches.
Uses:
Commercial edible nut, as well as, food for wildlife.
