Live Oak (Quercus virginiana) is a large spreading evergreen tree growing 40 to 80 feet with a 60 to 100 foot spread at full maturity. The live oak has a rounded, spreading or horizontal shape and is a favored tree known for its beauty and shade. The live oak has been called majestic and "one of the most impressive trees in North America." The bark is brown to reddish-brown and deeply furrowed. Acorns are eaten by deer, turkeys, squirrels, raccoons and wood ducks.

Intermediate shade tolerance; inhabiting sandy sites ranging from dry to wet.
Fruit:
Acorn, 2.5 cm long; nut is shiny dark brown to black; cap is long stalked, bowl shaped with appressed pubescent scales covering a third of the nut. Matures in one season
Uses:
Prized as a shade or ornamental tree because of the evergreen leaves and low crown. Acorns are sweet, making them appealing to wildlife.

Quercus is Latin for "oak tree"; virgianiana refers to the eastern New World.
