Persimmon (Diospyros virginiana)

Persimmon (Diospyros virginiana) is a small or medium sized tree growing from 30 to 60 feet with a trunk up to 1 foot in diameter with a short and slender trunk and somewhat rounded crown. Persimmon prefers a deep loamy, well-drained soil, but will tolerate any soil that is not waterlogged.  Persimmon produces a large crop of edible fruit that is enjoyed by livestock and is also popular with deer, turkey and many other wildlife species
 
Habitat:
Shade tolerant; found on a variety of sites ranging from damp to dry.
 
Fruit:
Round, pulpy yellow to orange berry, 4 cm wide.
 
Uses:
Furniture and veneer.  Fruit eaten by deer, turkey and many other wildlife species.
 
Botanical Name:
Diospyros means "divine fruit"; virginiana refers to the eastern "New World"
