Water Oak (Quercus nigra), also referred to as possum oak, is a tall slender tree reaching 50 to 80 feet in height with a trunk diameter of 2 to 3 ½ feet with a rounded crown that is symmetrical in shape.Water oak grows in moist or wet soils of upland and lowland forests. The water oak’s attractive form makes it a popular landscape tree.Due to its ability to grow and reproduce quickly, the water oak is often the most abundant species in the stand.The numerous small acorns produced provide food for turkeys, squirrels, deer and various species of ducks.
Habitat:
Shade intolerant; found on a variety of sites including dry uplands and moderately wet bottomlands.
Fruit:
Acorn, 1 cm long; dark brown nut, pubescent; cap is flat with appressed pubescent scales, covering one fourth or less of the nut. Matures in two seasons.
Uses:
Red oak lumber, construction and fuel. Acorns provide food for turkeys, squirrels, deer and various species of ducks.
Botantical Name:
Quercus is Latin for "oak tree". Nigra means "dark" referred to the nut color.
