Shumard Oak (Quercus shumardii)

Shumard Oak (Quercus shumardii) is one of the largest of the southern oaks becoming 100 feet or more in height with a trunk diameter of 4 to 5 feet or more, with a rather open, rounded canopy.  Shumard oak is a fast growing tree and is used in landscaping for its shade and beautiful fall coloration of red and gold.   The fruit is an important component to the diets of deer, turkeys and other wildlife species.  Shumard Oak prefers constantly moist and well-drained, deep, rich soils, but can also tolerate very dry soils. It thrives in full sun to partial sun.
 
Habitat:
Shade intolerant; found next to streams, rivers and bottomlands.
 
Fruit:
Acorn, 2-3 cm long; nut pubescent; cap with appressed pubescent scales, beanie-like with rolled edges, covers one-fourth of the nut.  Matures in two seasons.
 
Uses:
Red oak wood commercially important, used for flooring, cabinets, trim and furniture.  Acorns are eaten by deer, turkeys and many other wildlife species.
 
Botantical Name:
Quercus is Latin for "oak tree". Shumardii refers to the geologist Shumard.
