Swamp Chestnut (Quercus michauxii), also known as the cow oak or basket oak is a medium to large-sized tree 60 to 80 feet in height with a trunk diameter of 2 to 3 feet with a compact pyramidal to oval crown.Swamp Chestnut leaves turn a rich crimson in the fall.It strongly prefers soils that are moist, permanently moist, or permanently wet and tolerates standing water for several weeks at a time. White-tailed deer, turkey, squirrels, and hogs eat the large acorns, as well as cattle, hence the name cow oak.
Habitat:
Moderately shade tolerant; found in well-drained bottomlands and along stream and swamp edges.
Fruit:
Large Acorn, 4 cm long; cap is bowl shaped with loose pubescent scales, covering a third of the nut. Matures in one season.
Uses:
White oak lumber. Acorns are eaten by deer, turkey, squirrels, hogs and cattle.
Shumard Oak (Quercus shumardii) is one of the largest of the southern oaks becoming 100 feet or more in height with a trunk diameter of 4 to 5 feet or more, with a rather open, rounded canopy.Shumard oak is a fast growing tree and is used in landscaping for its shade and beautiful fall coloration of red and gold.The fruit is an important component to the diets of deer, turkeys and other wildlife species.Shumard Oak prefers constantly moist and well-drained, deep, rich soils, but can also tolerate very dry soils. It thrives in full sun to partial sun.
